How much is your money worth today?

Prices have gone up a lot over the years. Put in an amount of naira and the year you had it, and see what it would take to buy the same things today.

How we work it out

We use the consumer price index (CPI), which tracks how the prices of everyday goods and services change over time. If prices have risen four times since the year you chose, your amount has to be multiplied by four to buy the same basket today.

Dollar values use the official exchange rate: the average for the year you chose, and the latest official rate for today.

Where the figures come from

  • Inflation: National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) consumer price index. Yearly averages from 1990 to 2025 are the NBS series as compiled by the International Monetary Fund and World Bank. In January 2025 the NBS rebased the CPI to 2024 = 100; we join the old and new series at the 2024 average. Latest figure: September 2026 (index 146.38, headline inflation 14.63%), released 15 October 2026.
  • Exchange rate: Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) official rate. Yearly averages to 2025, as compiled by the IMF and World Bank. Today’s rate: ₦1,347.53 to $1, the CBN official (NFEM) rate for 28 October 2026.
  • Last updated: 29 October 2026.

This is a guide, not financial advice. Your own costs may have risen faster or slower than the national average, depending on what you buy and where you live. Before 1999, Nigeria had a fixed official exchange rate that was far from the market rate, so dollar values for those years can look odd.
