LAUTECH lecturers begin indefinite strike: what students should know about classes and exams
Lecturers at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, have been on an indefinite strike since midnight on Thursday 29 October. Lectures, examinations and laboratory work are suspended until the university pays outstanding allowances and implements the 2025 agreement between the Federal Government and ASUU. No resumption date has been given.
The LAUTECH branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) began what it called a 'total, comprehensive and indefinite' strike at midnight on Thursday 29 October, after a 14-day ultimatum issued on 14 October expired. The decision was taken at an emergency congress on Wednesday 28 October, a day after a meeting with university management failed to resolve the dispute, according to a statement signed by branch chairperson Prof. Olujimi Dada and secretary Dr Soji Arinola, TheCable and The Guardian reported.
The union wants the university to fully implement the 2025 FGN-ASUU agreement, signed in December 2025 and approved by LAUTECH's governing council, with arrears from January 2026. It is also demanding the balance of Earned Academic Allowances and promotion arrears dating from 2013 to 2025, as well as changes to the staff disciplinary committee, the committee of provosts and deans, and the university's electronic voting system. The union said management has blamed a lack of funds, and told its representatives it was trying to reach Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde for intervention, TheCable reported. The Nation reported the union as saying LAUTECH and other Oyo-owned institutions are the only ones in the South-West yet to implement the agreement.
Members have been told to suspend lectures, examinations, laboratory work, statutory meetings and all teaching contact with students, and to treat only directives from the branch chairperson as genuine. The strike affects LAUTECH only and is not a nationwide ASUU action. It comes the same week that medical and dental officers in Oyo State's public hospitals began their own strike over allowances, Punch reported.
The All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Oyo State, Sharafadeen Alli, criticised the state government over both strikes and promised prompt payment of salaries and allowances if elected in 2027, The Guardian and Punch reported. Online, students and parents shared concerns about delayed exams and another lost semester.
Pidgin: LAUTECH lecturers don start strike wey no get end date since Thursday night. No lecture, no exam, no practical until dem pay their allowance and arrears. E concern only LAUTECH, no be all universities. Make you wait for official word from the union or school before you travel back.
How this affects you: If you are a LAUTECH student, do not expect lectures or exams while the strike lasts, and do not travel back to Ogbomoso or pay for exam preparation based on forwarded 'resumption' messages. Wait for a notice from the university or a statement from the ASUU branch chairperson. Keep copies of your fees receipts and course registration, and if you have a NELFUND loan or scholarship deadline, check directly with the provider about how a delayed semester affects you.
