Fuel discount without real relief

The Federal Government announced a 30-day N60 per litre petrol discount in response to prices rising from N930 in January to about N1,420 since February 2026, but three weeks after the October 1, 2026 announcement it has not been implemented and is widely seen as tokenism that fails to address the serious ongoing economic hardship. In contrast, the National Economic Council announced a broader 90-day cost-of-living reduction plan focusing on food, taxes, projects, investment, and support for vulnerable groups, yet it also fails to tackle petrol prices directly.
