Last checked: 29 October 2026
A business name (for example a sole proprietorship) is registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC). The whole process is online on the CAC Company Registration Portal, and you can do it yourself without a lawyer or accountant.
What you need
- A valid means of identification
- A passport photograph and your signature, as image files
- Your business address and email address
- A proposed business name, plus one or two alternatives
Steps
- Create an account on the CAC Company Registration Portal and log in. A one-time code is sent to your email.
- Choose Name Reservation, then New Reservation. Select Business Name and the business type, type your proposed name and the nature of business, and check availability.
- Pay for the reservation. Once approved you receive an approval code (AV code).
- Go to Registration, click Register New Business and enter your AV code.
- Fill in the business details and proprietor details, then upload the ID, passport photograph and signature for each proprietor.
- Preview, pay the registration fee and submit.
- Check your dashboard. If the application is queried, read the reason, correct it and resubmit. When approved, download your certificate and status report.
