How to get, check or fix your NIN (NIMC guide)
Last checked: 29 October 2026
The National Identification Number (NIN) is the 11-digit number issued by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC). You need it for SIM registration, bank accounts, passports, JAMB, NELFUND and many other services.
What you need
- For first enrolment: go in person to a NIMC enrolment centre or an approved enrolment partner
- For retrieval: the phone line you used when you enrolled
Steps
- To get a NIN for the first time, visit a NIMC enrolment centre. First-time enrolment and the NIN slip are free, according to NIMC's service charter.
- To find a NIN you have forgotten, dial *346# from the phone number you used at enrolment and choose NIN retrieval. NIMC lists the charge as ₦50.
- If the number does not come back, check that you are using the original SIM, or visit a NIMC office for fingerprint verification.
- To correct details on your record, apply for modification. NIMC lists ₦2,000 for changes such as name or address, and ₦28,574 to correct a date of birth.
- Keep your NIN private. Share it only with organisations that genuinely need it.
