How petrol prices work in Nigeria

Since petrol subsidy removal in 2023, pump prices are no longer fixed by government. Prices are set by the market and can vary between NNPC retail stations and independent marketers, and from one state to another, depending on depot (ex-depot) prices, transport costs and the naira exchange rate.

Who is who: the NMDPRA (Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority) regulates supply and distribution; NNPC Ltd is the national oil company and runs a large retail network; the Dangote refinery in Lagos is a private refinery whose price changes often move the market.

Pidgin: Since 2023, government no dey fix petrol price again. Na market dey decide am, so price fit different for NNPC station and other filling station, and from one state to another.

How this affects you: Petrol price feeds into transport fares, food prices and the cost of running a generator or a business.
